What the Wegovy prescribing information covers

The Wegovy label covers indications, dosage and administration, contraindications, warnings and precautions, adverse reactions, drug interactions and use in specific populations [1]. All of its eligibility language is clinical: who the drug is indicated for, and in whom it should not be used [1].

Wegovy injection and Wegovy tablets are separate approvals

Wegovy injection is approved under NDA 215256, originally on 2021-06-04 [2]. With a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, it is indicated to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established CV disease and either obesity or overweight; to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in adults and in pediatric patients aged 12 years and older with obesity, and in adults with overweight plus at least one weight-related comorbid condition; and to treat noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (F2 to F3) in adults, under accelerated approval [1].

Wegovy tablets are approved under NDA 218316, originally on 2025-12-22 [3]. Their indications are adult-only: CV risk reduction in adults with established CV disease and obesity or overweight, and weight reduction and long-term maintenance in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus a weight-related comorbid condition. The label gives no pediatric or MASH indication for the tablets [1].

For either form, the label says use with another semaglutide-containing product or with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended [1].

Ozempic is a different product with a different label

Semaglutide is also sold as Ozempic, which is approved for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, for reducing major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes and established CV disease, and for reducing the risk of sustained eGFR decline, end-stage kidney disease and CV death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Ozempic has no weight-loss indication [5].

Compounded semaglutide is a different product again

FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing [4]. A compounded semaglutide prescription is not the FDA-approved Wegovy injection or Wegovy tablets described in the labeling. FDA also states that semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate salts are different active ingredients from the approved drug, with no lawful basis for use in compounding that the agency is aware of [4].
