Can You Drink Alcohol on Semaglutide (Wegovy / Ozempic)?

At a glance

  • Injection labels / Alcohol is not listed in the Wegovy or Ozempic drug interaction sections, and no drinking limit is set [1][2]
  • Tablet labels / Take with plain water only, then wait at least 30 minutes before any other drink [1][3]
  • Common stomach effects / Wegovy 2.4 mg injection: nausea 44%, vomiting 24%, diarrhea 30%, constipation 24% vs 16%, 6%, 16%, 11% on placebo [1]
  • Low blood sugar / Risk is higher with insulin or a sulfonylurea; labels advise considering a lower dose of those drugs when starting [1][2]
  • Pancreatitis / Labeled warning; the Wegovy label says to discontinue if pancreatitis is suspected [1]
  • Gastric emptying / Semaglutide delays gastric emptying and may change absorption of oral medicines [1][2]

What the labels say about alcohol

Neither the Wegovy nor the Ozempic drug interaction section lists alcohol, and neither sets a drinking limit [1][2]. Both sections cover two things: insulin or an insulin secretagogue such as a sulfonylurea, and oral medicines in general, because semaglutide delays gastric emptying and may change their absorption [1][2]. The Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets label covers the same categories and also does not list alcohol [3].

We found no published study that tested alcohol with semaglutide.

Tablet timing and other drinks

Wegovy tablets, Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are taken once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with up to 4 ounces of water, and no other liquid [1][3]. The tablet is swallowed whole and not split, crushed, chewed or dissolved [1][3]. After the dose, at least 30 minutes must pass before food, any beverage other than water, or other oral medicines [1][3].

The tablet labels apply this wait to any beverage other than water. The injection labels carry no such timing rule: Wegovy and Ozempic are injected once weekly at any time of day, with or without meals [1][2].

Stomach side effects

Gastrointestinal reactions are the most common problem on semaglutide and are worst during dose escalation [1]. In the Wegovy 2.4 mg weight-management trials, nausea occurred in 44% vs 16% on placebo, diarrhea in 30% vs 16%, vomiting in 24% vs 6% and constipation in 24% vs 11%; any GI reaction occurred in 73% vs 47%, and 6.8% vs 3.2% stopped treatment because of adverse reactions [1]. For Ozempic in type 2 diabetes, any GI reaction occurred in 36.4% on 1 mg and 32.7% on 0.5 mg vs 15.3% on placebo [2].

Low blood sugar with insulin or a sulfonylurea

Semaglutide lowers blood glucose and can cause hypoglycemia [1]. The risk is higher when it is combined with insulin or an insulin secretagogue such as a sulfonylurea, and the labels advise considering a lower dose of those drugs when semaglutide is started [1][2].

In a Wegovy trial in adults with type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 27 or higher, glucose below 54 mg/dL occurred in 6.2% on Wegovy 2.4 mg vs 2.5% on placebo, and the Wegovy label says risk was higher with a sulfonylurea [1]. That figure comes from the Wegovy trial; the Ozempic label gives its own hypoglycemia warning for insulin and secretagogues without those rates [2].

Pancreatitis

The Wegovy label warns that acute pancreatitis, including fatal and nonfatal hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis, has been observed with GLP-1 receptor agonists including Wegovy, and describes the symptoms as persistent or severe abdominal pain, sometimes radiating to the back, with or without nausea or vomiting; it says to discontinue Wegovy and begin appropriate management if pancreatitis is suspected [1]. The Ozempic label carries the same warning [2].

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink alcohol while taking Wegovy or Ozempic?
The Wegovy and Ozempic labels do not prohibit alcohol and set no drinking limit [1][2]. The tablet labels say to take the tablet with plain water only and to wait at least 30 minutes before drinking any other beverage [1][3].
Do I have to wait before drinking alcohol after a semaglutide tablet?
The tablet labels say to wait. Wegovy, Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are taken on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water and no other liquid, and at least 30 minutes must pass before food, beverages or other oral medicines [1][3].
Does alcohol make semaglutide side effects worse?
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation are the most common effects and are worst during dose escalation: with Wegovy 2.4 mg, nausea was 44% vs 16% on placebo and vomiting 24% vs 6% [1]. We found no published study testing alcohol with semaglutide, so how much it adds is not measured.
Can alcohol cause low blood sugar on semaglutide?
The labels warn that semaglutide lowers blood glucose and that hypoglycemia risk rises with insulin or an insulin secretagogue such as a sulfonylurea, and they advise considering a lower dose of those drugs when starting [1][2].
Do the semaglutide labels set a drinking limit?
No. The Wegovy, Ozempic and oral semaglutide labels set no drinking limit [1][2][3].
