From the two labels

  • In metformin's own trial, diarrhea affected 53% on metformin versus 12% on placebo, and 6% stopped because of it; taking metformin with meals helps.[2]
  • Rybelsus nausea: 11% at 7 mg and 20% at 14 mg, versus 6% on placebo.[1]
  • Metformin levels did not change in a clinically significant way when taken with semaglutide.[1]
  • Metformin can lower vitamin B12; the label advises checking it every 2 to 3 years.[2]
  • With a sulfonylurea or insulin, Rybelsus raises the risk of low blood sugar, including severe episodes.[1]

Stop metformin and call right away, or call the same day

  • Very weak and tired, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, unusual sleepiness, or unexplained stomach problems with vomiting or diarrhea: possible lactic acidosis. Stop metformin and call right away.[2]
  • Vomiting or diarrhea that leaves you dehydrated, especially while Rybelsus is being started or increased: kidney function needs checking.[1]
