What the labels say
- Wegovy delays stomach emptying and may affect how tablets are absorbed; the label says to monitor the effects of oral medicines taken with it.[1]
- Nausea in Wegovy's weight-reduction trials: 44% on Wegovy, 16% on placebo.[1]
- Nausea in the pooled sertraline trials: 26% on sertraline, 12% on placebo.[2]
- Nausea in the escitalopram adult depression trials: 15% on escitalopram, 7% on placebo.[3]
- SSRIs can lower blood sodium; older people, people on diuretics and those who are volume-depleted are at greater risk.[2]
- The sertraline Medication Guide says antidepressants may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some people 24 and younger, especially in the first few months or after a dose change.[2]
- The Wegovy label removed its suicidal behavior and ideation warning in February 2026.[1]
Call right away
- Agitation or confusion, racing heartbeat, sweating or fever, twitching or stiff muscles, with nausea, vomiting or diarrhea: possible serotonin syndrome. Call your healthcare provider right away, or 911 in an emergency.[2]
- Headache, weakness or unsteadiness, confusion or memory problems: possible low sodium. Call your healthcare provider right away.[2]
- Severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting: stop Wegovy and call your healthcare provider right away.[1]
Questions for either prescriber
- If I vomit within a few hours of my SSRI, should I take another dose or wait?
- Would a sodium blood test make sense if I keep vomiting?
- Should my Wegovy dose rise more slowly because of my nausea?
- Which of you should I call first about mood changes?
