What the ibutamoren trials can tell you

  • In a 2-year trial in healthy adults aged 60 to 81, IGF-I was back at pretreatment levels 1 month after switching to placebo, and 3 and 6 months after the study ended.[1]
  • In the same trial, the year-1 changes reversed in people switched to placebo for year 2.[1]
  • In a placebo-controlled trial of 24 obese men aged 18 to 50, half given ibutamoren for 8 weeks, fasting glucose and insulin did not change, but a glucose tolerance test showed impaired glucose handling at 2 and 8 weeks, so a normal fasting value alone may not tell the whole story.[2]
  • A trial in older adults recovering from hip fracture was stopped early because of a congestive heart failure signal.[3]
  • FDA lists ibutamoren mesylate among bulk substances that may present significant safety risks (for outsourcing facilities since December 29, 2022 and for 503A pharmacies since September 29, 2023), citing potential congestive heart failure in certain patients.[4]

For the clinician reviewing this record

  1. Which tests, if any, do you want after I stop, and when?
  2. Is a glucose tolerance test or HbA1c more useful for me than a single fasting glucose?
  3. Which signs of fluid build-up should make me call you rather than wait?
  4. Could hand numbness or swelling be related, and how long should I watch it?
  5. Should my other prescribers be told that I used ibutamoren?
