Figures to bring to the review

  • Wegovy label: constipation was reported by 24% of adults on 2.4 mg against 11% on placebo in the weight trials.[1]
  • STEP 1 to 3: one constipation episode on semaglutide 2.4 mg lasted a median of 47 days, against 35 days on placebo.[2]
  • Wegovy label: if a dose is not tolerated during escalation, consider delaying the next increase for 4 weeks; if 2.4 mg is not tolerated, the dose can be reduced to 1.7 mg.[1]

Seek prompt evaluation

  • Ileus, intestinal obstruction and severe constipation with fecal impaction appear in the Wegovy label's postmarketing reports.[1]
  • Severe pain in the stomach area that will not go away: stop Wegovy and call your healthcare provider right away.[1]

For the review

  1. Is it time for an osmotic laxative, and for how long?
  2. Would a prescription secretagogue or prucalopride suit my situation?
  3. Should my dose be held, or stepped down for a while?
  4. Does my surgical or bowel history mean I should be examined or imaged sooner?
