Wegovy burp and meal diary, with the bismuth label checks

Write down what you ate, how big the meal was and how close to bedtime, then score the burps afterwards, so a two-week food trial gives you an answer rather than an impression. If you are thinking about bismuth subsalicylate, its Drug Facts checks are printed here.

Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol): what its Drug Facts say

  • Its listed uses include upset stomach from overindulgence in food and drink, including gas and belching.[1]
  • It contains salicylate: do not take it if you are allergic to salicylates, including aspirin, or are taking other salicylate products.[1]
  • Do not use it if you have an ulcer, a bleeding problem, or bloody or black stool.[1]
  • Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take a blood thinner or a medicine for diabetes, gout or arthritis.[1]
  • It can cause a temporary, harmless darkening of the stool or tongue.[1]
  • Stop and ask a doctor if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, or if ringing in the ears or hearing loss occurs.[1]
  • In 10 healthy volunteers, bismuth subsalicylate cut hydrogen sulfide release from stool samples by more than 95%; the study did not measure burps.[2]

When burps are not the main problem

  • Severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting: the Wegovy Medication Guide says to stop Wegovy and call your healthcare provider right away.[3]
  • Upper stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes, fever, or clay-colored stools: call your healthcare provider (possible gallbladder problem).[3]

If the diary shows no clear food pattern

  1. Could slower stomach emptying at my current dose be the main cause?
  2. Is bismuth subsalicylate safe with my other medicines?
  3. Should my next dose increase wait until this settles?
  4. Do my symptoms call for a check for reflux or gastroparesis?
