Losartan and glutathione: product record and home blood pressure diary

Write down the exact glutathione product and how you take it, then keep home blood pressure readings from a week before you start until a few weeks after, with the times you took each one. It ends with the Cozaar warning signs that should not wait for a visit.

What the Cozaar label and the glutathione studies say

  • Cozaar can be taken with or without food. The label sets no spacing from supplements and does not mention glutathione.[1]
  • About 14% of a losartan dose becomes its active metabolite, which peaks 3 to 4 hours after the dose.[1]
  • Fluconazole, an antifungal that blocks the enzyme activating losartan, cut exposure to the active metabolite by about 40%; this is the kind of effect the label lists, and glutathione is not on its list.[1]
  • The blood pressure effect is mostly present within one week, though some studies saw the full effect only at 3 to 6 weeks.[1]
  • The label asks you not to use potassium supplements or potassium salt substitutes without checking with your healthcare provider.[1]
  • In healthy adults, 500 mg of glutathione twice daily for 4 weeks produced no significant change in glutathione status.[2]
  • In 54 non-smoking adults, 250 or 1,000 mg a day for 6 months raised glutathione body stores; this trial did not involve losartan.[3]

Do not wait for your next appointment

  • Swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue: get emergency medical help right away and stop taking Cozaar.[1]
  • Feeling faint or dizzy: lie down, then call your doctor right away.[1]
  • New swelling of the feet, ankles or hands, or weight gain you cannot explain: call your doctor.[1]
  • Pregnancy while taking Cozaar: tell your doctor right away.[1]

For the prescriber or pharmacist

  1. Do I need to space glutathione from losartan at all?
  2. Which home readings should make me call before my next visit?
  3. Should my potassium or kidney tests be repeated after I start the supplement?
  4. Does an IV or injected glutathione product change your advice?
  5. Is there anything in this product's other ingredients that matters with losartan?
