Wegovy follow-up sheet for adults 65 and older

Bring this to a Wegovy follow-up: record weight, falls, strength, fluids and home readings since the last visit, tick new symptoms, and use the questions to review kidney, fracture, blood-sugar and medicine risks with the prescriber.

New or ongoing since the last visit

  • Vomiting or diarrhea that keeps coming back
  • Trouble keeping fluids down
  • Dizziness, fainting or new confusion
  • Passing less urine than usual
  • Eating much less than usual
  • Constipation or stomach pain
  • New weakness or slower walking

What the label says that matters after 65

  • No overall difference in effectiveness was seen between patients 65 and older and younger adults.[1]
  • Semaglutide levels did not differ in a clinically significant way by age group (under 65, 65 to 74, and 75 and older).[1]
  • In the cardiovascular trial, patients 75 and older had more hip and pelvis fractures on Wegovy than on placebo (2.4% vs 0.6%).[1]
  • Kidney function should be checked when side effects could cause dehydration, especially when starting or increasing the dose.[1]
  • With insulin or a sulfonylurea, the label says to consider lowering that dose when starting Wegovy, because low blood sugar is more likely.[1]
  • Wegovy slows stomach emptying, so tell the team before planned surgery or a procedure with anesthesia or deep sedation.[1]

Questions for the prescriber

  1. Is my weight coming down faster than you intended?
  2. Do my blood pressure, water pill or diabetes medicines need a review now?
  3. Given my other conditions and medicines, when should my kidney function be checked?
  4. Is my fall or fracture risk high enough to look at bone health?
  5. Which of my other medicines need closer monitoring because Wegovy slows stomach emptying?
  6. Does staying on Wegovy still fit my goals for mobility and daily life?

Call the prescribing team promptly

  • Vomiting or diarrhea that stops you keeping fluids down: losing fluids can cause kidney problems.[1]
  • Severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without nausea or vomiting: stop Wegovy and call right away.[1]
  • Dizziness, sweating or shakiness while also using insulin or a sulfonylurea (possible low blood sugar).[1]
  • A new fall or fracture, since the label reports more hip and pelvis fractures on Wegovy after age 75.[1]
