AndroGel Gynecomastia: Diet Protocols That Help
At a glance
- Key point / Gynecomastia is associated with testosterone replacement therapy [1]
- Mechanism / Aromatase converts androgens to estrogens; estrogens stimulate breast tissue [2][3]
- Body fat / Adipose tissue is one extragonadal site of estradiol production in men [4]
- Soy / A meta-analysis found no statistically significant hormone effect from soy protein or isoflavones in men [5]
What is known about gynecomastia on testosterone
Gynecomastia is enlargement of male breast tissue. It is listed among side effects associated with testosterone replacement therapy [1]. A review notes estrogens stimulate breast tissue and androgens inhibit it, and most cases come from deficient androgen action or excessive estrogen action [3].
Why food claims are limited
Aromatase converts testosterone to estradiol [2]. In men, estradiol is also produced in extragonadal sites that include adipose tissue [4], which makes body fat biologically relevant to estrogen production. That does not show that a particular food or amount of weight loss changes gynecomastia.
What the food data show
Soy: a meta-analysis of 15 placebo-controlled treatment groups found no statistically significant effect of soy protein or isoflavones on total testosterone, SHBG, free testosterone or free androgen index in men; it did not measure gynecomastia [5].
Alcohol: a review proposed increased aromatization as a possible mechanism for feminization in some male alcoholics, and reported that chronic heavy alcohol increased aromatization of androgen in the liver of male rats [6].
Zinc: in rats, a zinc-deficient diet increased liver conversion of testosterone to estradiol and lowered serum testosterone, estradiol and LH [7]. That is not evidence of a benefit in men.
