Supplements That May Help With Pancreatitis Risk on Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

At a glance

  • Pancreatitis risk in pooled trials / not significantly increased with tirzepatide (RR 1.46, 95% CI 0.59 to 3.61) [1]
  • Supplement evidence / no supplement dose or schedule for preventing pancreatitis is established on Mounjaro [2]
  • Label warning / acute pancreatitis, including fatal and non-fatal hemorrhagic or necrotizing cases, has been observed with GLP-1 receptor agonists or Mounjaro [2]
  • Label instruction / discontinue Mounjaro if pancreatitis is suspected and initiate appropriate management [2]
  • Real-world data / no clear increase in severe events such as pancreatitis in observational studies [3]

Does tirzepatide actually increase pancreatitis risk?

The Mounjaro label states that acute pancreatitis, including fatal and non-fatal hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis, has been observed in patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists or with Mounjaro [2].

The controlled trial data do not show a significant increase. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled nine randomized trials with 9,871 participants and found no statistically significant rise in pancreatitis with tirzepatide compared with placebo, basal insulin, dulaglutide or semaglutide (RR 1.46, 95% CI 0.59 to 3.61) [1]. A meta-analysis of 21 trials and 99,599 patients found no difference in pancreatitis between GLP-1 receptor agonists, tirzepatide included, and controls [4]. A 2025 review of real-world data likewise found no clear increase in severe events such as pancreatitis among people using these drugs [3].

Do any supplements lower the risk?

No supplement dose or schedule for preventing pancreatitis is established for people taking Mounjaro, and the Mounjaro label does not recommend any supplement for it [2]. The tirzepatide pancreatitis meta-analysis tested the drug against placebo and active comparators, not supplements [1].

What does the label say to watch for?

After starting Mounjaro, the label says to observe patients carefully for signs and symptoms of acute pancreatitis: persistent or severe abdominal pain, sometimes radiating to the back, with or without nausea or vomiting [2]. The label's instruction is to discontinue Mounjaro if pancreatitis is suspected and to initiate appropriate management [2].

Frequently asked questions

How common is pancreatitis with Mounjaro?
Across nine randomized trials with 9,871 participants, tirzepatide was not linked to a statistically significant increase in pancreatitis (RR 1.46, 95% CI 0.59 to 3.61) [1]. A separate meta-analysis of 21 trials and 99,599 patients found no difference in pancreatitis between GLP-1 receptor agonists and controls [4].
Which pancreatitis symptoms does the Mounjaro label list?
Persistent or severe abdominal pain, sometimes radiating to the back, which may or may not come with nausea or vomiting [2].
