Supplements That Help With Sulfur Burps on Wegovy (Semaglutide 2.4 mg)
At a glance
- Label term and rate / eructation, 7% on Wegovy 2.4 mg vs under 1% on placebo [1]
- Ginger evidence / nausea relief at a divided 1500 mg daily dose; too few trials on other GI complaints [2]
- Closest human gas trial / alpha-galactosidase with a 420 g bean meal cut breath hydrogen and flatulence severity in 8 healthy volunteers [3]
- Closest hydrogen sulfide data / bismuth subsalicylate 524 mg four times daily cut fecal hydrogen sulfide release by more than 95% in 10 volunteers; a drug, not a supplement [4]
- Label on other oral products / delayed gastric emptying can change absorption; monitoring suggested for narrow therapeutic index drugs [1]
- Label GI warning / severe GI reactions 4.1% vs 0.9% on placebo; not recommended in severe gastroparesis [1]
Is there a supplement that helps?
Burping itself is a labeled adverse reaction. In pooled safety data from three placebo-controlled trials of up to 68 weeks (2,116 adults on 2.4 mg weekly, 1,261 on placebo), eructation was reported by 7% versus under 1% [1]. The table reports nausea in 44% versus 16%, and the label also reports discontinuation for adverse reactions in 6.8% versus 3.2% [1]. The label does not report a separate rate for burps that smell of sulfur.
What the label says about the gut
Semaglutide delays gastric emptying, and the label says this can affect absorption of oral medicines [1]. Its GI warning describes severe gastrointestinal adverse reactions (4.1% versus 0.9% on placebo) and says Wegovy is not recommended in patients with severe gastroparesis [1]. Postmarketing reports in the label include ileus, intestinal obstruction and severe constipation with fecal impaction [1]. The labels do not state that semaglutide causes gastroparesis, and they do not name a cause for burping beyond listing it as an adverse reaction [1].
Ginger
Ginger has been studied for nausea, not for sulfur burps. A systematic review of clinical trials in gastrointestinal disorders concluded that a divided lower daily dose of 1500 mg of ginger is beneficial for nausea relief, and that studies of other GI complaints were too few to give a reliable result [2].
Alpha-galactosidase
The closest human trial tested alpha-galactosidase: 8 healthy volunteers ate a meal with 420 g of cooked beans plus 300 or 1200 GalU of the enzyme or placebo. The 1200-GalU dose significantly reduced breath hydrogen excretion and flatulence severity, while both doses reduced the total symptom score [3]. It was a small study in healthy volunteers eating beans and measured breath hydrogen and gas symptoms.
Bismuth subsalicylate and hydrogen sulfide
Bismuth subsalicylate, a drug rather than a supplement, reduced hydrogen sulfide released from stool in a small study. Fecal samples from 10 healthy subjects were analyzed before and after 524 mg four times a day for 3 to 7 days, and treatment produced more than a 95% reduction in fecal hydrogen sulfide release [4]. The study measured stool samples, not burps, and nobody in it was taking semaglutide. Bismuth subsalicylate contains a salicylate.
What the label says about serious gut symptoms
The Wegovy label describes persistent or severe abdominal pain, sometimes radiating to the back, that may or may not be accompanied by nausea or vomiting, as symptoms of possible pancreatitis, and states that Wegovy should be discontinued if pancreatitis is suspected [1]. It lists acute gallbladder disease and acute kidney injury from volume depletion as serious risks [1].
