Which semaglutide products exist in 2026

FDA-approved semaglutide products are Ozempic injection (NDA 209637, approved 2017-12-05), Rybelsus tablets (NDA 213051, approved 2019-09-20), Wegovy injection (NDA 215256, approved 2021-06-04) and Wegovy tablets (NDA 218316, approved 2025-12-22). Ozempic tablets at 1.5, 4 and 9 mg are also marketed under the Rybelsus approval [5][6][7][8].

Wegovy injection and Wegovy tablets carry weight-management indications [1]. Ozempic does not: its label covers glycemic control in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and kidney outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease [2]. Wegovy and Ozempic have different labeled uses, and the injection and tablet forms are separate products.

How the Wegovy injection dose steps up

Wegovy injection starts at 0.25 mg weekly for weeks 1 to 4, then 0.5 mg for weeks 5 to 8, 1 mg for weeks 9 to 12, 1.7 mg for weeks 13 to 16, then maintenance from week 17 [1]. Adults who have tolerated Wegovy 2.4 mg weekly for at least four weeks and need more weight loss may increase to a maximum of 7.2 mg weekly [1].

Can compounded semaglutide still be prescribed

State-licensed pharmacies may compound semaglutide for an individual patient on a prescription, with limits on copies of approved drugs [9]. Outsourcing facilities generally cannot compound it from bulk substances, because FDA says semaglutide is on neither the outsourcing bulk list nor the shortage list [9]. FDA says it does not intend to act against a compounder filling four or fewer prescriptions per calendar month of a product that is essentially a copy of an approved drug, or where the prescriber documents a significant difference for that individual patient [9].

Compounded drugs are not FDA approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing, and FDA says they should be used only in patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug [4]. FDA also says semaglutide sodium and semaglutide acetate salts are different active ingredients from the approved drug, with no lawful basis for use in compounding that it is aware of [4].

Frequently asked questions

Wegovy injection and Wegovy tablets have weight-management indications [1]. Ozempic does not; it is approved for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction and kidney outcomes [2].

No. FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing [4].
Can pharmacies still compound semaglutide?
Only for an individual patient with a prescription, and with limits. FDA says it does not intend to act against a compounder filling four or fewer prescriptions per month of a product that is essentially a copy, or where a prescriber documents a significant difference for that patient [9].
