Which product a price would describe
Wegovy is two separately approved products: the injection was approved on 2021-06-04 [1] and the tablets on 2025-12-22 [2]. The injection is indicated for adults and children aged 12 and older with obesity, and for adults with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition; the tablets are indicated for adults only [3]. Ozempic also contains semaglutide, but its label covers type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction and kidney outcomes, with no weight-loss indication [4].
Dose and form are part of the question
The injection is taken weekly and steps up every four weeks: 0.25 mg for weeks 1 to 4, 0.5 mg for weeks 5 to 8, 1 mg for weeks 9 to 12 and 1.7 mg for weeks 13 to 16, with maintenance from week 17 [3]. Recommended maintenance is 2.4 mg; adults who tolerate 2.4 mg for at least four weeks and need more weight loss may go to a maximum of 7.2 mg weekly [3]. Drugs@FDA lists each injection strength as its own product under the Wegovy application [1].
The tablets step every 30 days: 1.5 mg for days 1 to 30, 4 mg for days 31 to 60, 9 mg for days 61 to 90, then 25 mg from day 91 [3]. Tablet and injection milligrams are not interchangeable: oral bioavailability is about 1% to 2%, against 89% for the injection [3].
Cash, insurance and coupons
The Wegovy labeling covers uses, dosing and safety and states no cash price, insurance copay or coupon amount [3]. Those come from pharmacies, insurers and the manufacturer's program, so any quote should name the form (injection or tablets) and the strength.
How compounded semaglutide differs from Wegovy
Compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved and is not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing, and FDA says compounded drugs should be used only in patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug [5]. As of 2026-05-31 FDA had received 990 adverse event reports for compounded semaglutide and says that count likely undercounts [5]. FDA reports dosing errors with compounded injectable semaglutide — patients measuring wrong doses, clinicians miscalculating, doses above the label — and says semaglutide sodium and acetate salts are different active ingredients from the approved drug [5].
A pharmacy may compound semaglutide only for an individual patient on a prescription. For a product that is essentially a copy of an approved drug, FDA says it does not intend to act against a compounder filling four or fewer such prescriptions in a calendar month, and a prescriber's documented significant difference for an individual patient is a separate exception [6].
